The Madness is back for round two............to get mad ........

Yes, the second weekend of March Madness is set to begin Thursday. We can't look at this weekends match-ups until we address the madness from the first weekend. Yes, that means all of the upsets. My bracket like many other college basketball fans is currently on life support as it is struggling to stay a float. On a positive note, the tournaments over all number one seed, Kentucky Wildcats, flew through round two and three of the tournament with ease. Others might say otherwise, but if you are a true Kentucky fan you would recall the Wildcats looked similar at the beginning of the tournament last season before going on run to make it to the finale of the final four. While there might seem to be reason for concern this team is the least of your worries in the tournament.

The second round of the tournament was filled with interesting match-ups that resulted in absolute madness.  First beginning with the SMU Mustangs against the UCLA Bruins. On first thought a 6 seed verses an 11 seed, would easily result in the a six seed blow out.  We can't forget this isn't a regular season game. It's March Madness. Little did we know the Mustangs wouldn't show up ready to play. Yes, they won the American Athletic Conference title but that was no excuse for how they came out against the Bruins. The mustangs from the tip were lethargic and slow and allowed the Bruins to stay in the game. The controversial call at the end of regulation did not determine the outcome of this game. The mustangs were not having a great shooting night, that is to be understood, but to shoot 60 percent from the line. That is unacceptable, especially when you have 6 more free attempts then your opponent. That would have gave you some room of comfort. Fans wouldn't have to say what if. The Bruins played a solid defensive game because they stepped up their intensity while the mustangs treated this as a regular season game.

To take a line out of the mustangs book, the Baylor Bears faced the same fate as their other Texas team. The Baylor Bears different than the Mustangs came out strong, but allowed the Georgia State Panthers to stick around. The Bears took their gas off the pedal and believed they could cruise to the finish line. Little did they know it was March Madness. The Bears began the game 16-6 and would be up 56-44 with 2:54 left in regulation. So how did this team lose? Clearly the Madness got to them before regulation ended. The fact R.J. Hunter was able to hit a three pointer in the final three seconds of regulation to give Georgia State the lead, speaks for its self. This isn't to take anything away from the Georgia State Panthers but their guard R.J. Hunter was not having a good game. The fact that he hit the shot showed two things. The Bears had took their foot completely off the pedal believing they had won. The Panthers saw an opportunity and capitalized on it.

The first day was just beginning as high tournament expectations were in the sights of the Iowa State Cardinals. The cardinals similar to the Mustangs from the game tip were lethargic. They seemed to not have a passion or spark. The Cardinals were not getting back on defense. It  was just an over all bad performance by the Cardinals against UAB. While the Cardinals played far from a perfect game it came down to the last seconds as UAB hit a few late shots to give them the slight edge.

Another notable game that came down to the final seconds was LSU Tigers verses NC State Wolfpack. This game similar to Baylor verses Georgia State had a clear winner after the first half.  The madness and the prize on the line got to this LSU team. The Tigers had to earn the win by playing two solid half's. LSU allowed NC state to get back into this game which resulted in a lost for the Tigers. Not making their free throws down the stretch hurt the Tigers. At one point the Tigers were up by 16 to begin the second half. The tigers handed this game over to NC State in the second half which lead to a sweet sixteen appearance by the Wolfpack.

Now on to round three of the tournament where some of the lower seeds had their share of trials and tribulations as some prevailed and others failed.

The first match-up resulted in complete disappointment as NC State crushed pasted Villanova 71-68. This score might have shocked many but wasn't as surprising to me. Villanova over the season had the tendency to skate by teams that weren't ranked in the top 25. They underestimated their appointment in those games. While they had statement wins against teams that were ranked in the top 25,  Nova scraped by Creighton and Syracuse in an over time victory. This team should not have been ranked as the number one seed, even though they had staple wins this season. They only showed up when the bright lights were on. To be a great team you have to show up all of the time no matter who you're playing. In NC State's defense, they played a tough solid game and capitalized on the careless mistakes by Nova. This game from start to finish belonged to the Wolfpack. That day they were the better basketball team.

The second upset match-up made a statement, as number two over all seed in the East Region  Virginia fell to Michigan State. Virginia is a defensive geared team, so their offense dried up to the point they weren't able to score. When your shots aren't falling its understood you have to play defense, but when you can't get anything going you can't win. At the end of the day its a score driven game and at the end of regulation its who has the most points. Virginia couldn't produce that, which is why they struggled to only shoot 30 percent from the field. This gave Michigan State the edge in this situation because they can can get to the free-throw line and shoot. At some point the style Virginia plays was prone to hurt them as they played better teams. Defense  is exhausting as well and Michigan State can wear a team down defensively because they can score from practically anywhere.

A team that did not look to hot the third round of the tournament were the Wisconsin Badgers. Some might recall in the tournament last year the Badgers faced off against the Oregon Ducks in round 32. This was a rematch to see would the ducks show up this time around? While last season the badgers flew past the Ducks with ease, this year it was dog fight to the end. This was because the PAC -12 player of the year happened to be on the opposing team. Joseph Young gave the Badgers problems the entire night, as he scored jumper after jumper. Young would go for 30 in this game on 12/25 shooting for the Ducks. The Badgers wouldn't pull away until late with 4:13 left in regulation. The Oregon Ducks played a solid game but weren't talented enough to beat the Wisconsin Badgers team.

The key here is just because you a lower seed does not mean you can just walk away with title. In the round of 32 the number 1 and 2 seed went out in the East Region which means you have to respect your opponent and play hard until the last second.

The battle of the point guards ....

So who is the best point guard in the NBA?  We all know that is a subjective question. This discussion may be determined differently among groups. The Western Conference point guards vs the Eastern Conference point guards. The clear point here is the NBA is has the most elite players in basketball. The best players in basketball. While this question is subjective the stats don't lie.

In the Eastern Conference, it is clear this award is among three special players. Kyle Lowry, Kyrie Irving, and John Wall and not to far behind Dwyane Wade, Michael Carter Williams and Jeff Teague. Arguably the way Dwyane Wade has played without the presence of Chris Bosh brought him into this discussion. His aggressiveness on offense and shot proficiency is just two of the many things he does well. Kyle Lowry is averaging 18 points, 7 ast., and 5 rebounds. Kyrie Irving is averaging 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 ast. To round of the field, John Wall averages 17 points, 10 ast., 5 rebounds. If bring this conversation into the role of a point guard, John Wall would unanimously win this argument. Fortunately Kyrie Irving plays with the best player in the world. He doesn't have the typical ball handling responsibilities Kyle Lowry, John Wall, or any other point guard in the league have. Would that eliminate him from the conversation? No, because he does other things that help with the efficiency of the Cavaliers offense such as scoring, rebounding and getting back on defense. This isn't to say, if Irving was asked to be a proficient scorer, assister and rebounder he couldn't. The Cavaliers right now are over brushed with talent, there for he doesn't need  to take on those responsibilities. This argument also goes to Stephen Curry of the Western Conference. While if the Golden State Warriors needed him to have over 10 ast. a game i'm confident the man would be able to do it. Right now these two players are on teams where their is to much talent for it to just be a one man show.

This leads into the argument of who is the best point guard in the Western Conference . As mentioned Stephen Curry has been placed into this argument rightfully over the past season because of what the Warriors  have accomplished this season. But should he? James Harden and Russell Westbrook are averaging more points then Curry this season so what makes Curry so special? Or better yet why is he even relevant to this argument? There's one stat that isn't mentioned under Stephen Curry's profile that is very relevant to the conversation. It goes farther then the success of the individual player. At the end of the day, it's team basketball and when your team is winning you are rightfully placed into the conversation. There is a flip side to this argument as well. If the team as a unit is doing well because they are playing great team basketball why is he receiving all the praises. In Stephen Curry's defense when you have another proficient scorer such as Klay Thompson on your roster it makes you look alot better and makes your job alot easier. All you have to do is bring the ball out and dish it over to one of your teammates to score. That sounds extremely easy, but it isn't. The problem is, no one can do that but him, at least on the Golden State roster. When he is not there who is suppose to take care of the ball handling to dish it out to players. This is exactly what Stephen Curry's responsibilities have developed into as a player of the Golden State Warriors. The reason they have had the success this season is because of "team basketball". There is no one man show in Golden State rather ever one on the roster has a specific role. This also speaks to the the level of talent Curry is surrounded with in Golden State. Alot of teams don't have proficient shooters. This allows the Warriors to depend on more then one offensive threat.

The clear point here is to say there is one distinct point guard is far better than the rest is absurd. Although there are players that can be placed in the top three category of best point guards based on aggressiveness and scoring capabilities, to just look at a players numbers is nothing short of insanity. Proficiency would be the only category in which you could make that judgement call because every team dynamic is different but shooting percentage is not. While you have more of a team effort in Cleveland and Golden State, you have a one man show in Oklahoma City. To say that one player is the best point guard is not an accurate judgement call in talent or who actually is the best point guard.

My point here is this argument is to subjective to be relevant in this age in basketball. Especially at the NBA level.

A slight shift in the playoff race ......

The long awaited return of Paul George has now raised eyebrows in the NBA, as it is reported he is expected to be back in the Pacers line up next week. This particularly effects the Eastern Conference and the playoff race. With his return this lifts the Indiana Pacers past their current seed of 7 possibly to make a deep run in the playoffs. If George plays at the level he did last season and the Pacers are able to avoid the Cleveland Cavaliers in the earlier rounds we could see a possible rematch of these teams in the NBA Eastern Conference finals. A few weeks ago George wasn't sure if it would be a smart decision to return this late in the season as the Pacers geared up for the playoffs but multiple sources report George could return as soon as next week. So, what does his return mean for the rest of the Eastern Conference? Lets just say every team should be "shaking in their boots". The Pacers have done a great job this season making the adjustments to replace George and Lance Stephenson but no one can do what Paul George does on the defensive end of the ball. It also doesn't hurt that he averaged around 22 points a game for the Pacers last season. On the flip side since he hasn't been their for the season the chemistry between him and his teammates has to be reignited.

The clear point here is the Pacers could be a true threat to the Cavaliers come playoff time if George returns and is productive as he was over the past three years in the post season.

The attention shifts to a team that can't stay out of the heads and minds of NBA basketball fans. Yes, you guessed it the Cleveland Cavaliers? This team has made headlines every week from their 12 game winning streak to them only losing 6 games since January 15th. This team is definitely feeling the pressure.

This brings me to the point of why I brought the Cavaliers into context, if the play offs began today these two teams would face off but who would win.  Since the return of George is highly likely for the Pacers, how will this effect their first round match-up? For one LeBron James and company based on recent history don't want to face off against at hot Pacers team currently, especially not in the opening playoff series. Who would want to face off against a elite defender and offensive player in Paul George and who was a contender the past two seasons for the league MVP? The last three weeks for both teams will be crucial.

On to the Western Conference where  Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Kevin Durant is not expected to return the remainder of the regular season. What does this mean for the Thunder heading into the post season? First, they must get to the post season. Not much has changed since the end of February when this team single handily became Russell Westbrook's squad. Russell Westbrook over the span of a month half "has been ball'n", getting shots how ever when and when ever he wants. In addition he matched his assist record of 17 and recorded over 11 double doubles and 3 triple doubles this season. To say the least he has completely taken over this team. The decision made to sit Durant the remainder of the season has both positive and negative effects. For Westbrook's career it is a smart decision for the team not so much while it might be the best decision chemistry wise. With the return of Durant, Westbrook would have to readjust his game to a more conservative. This meaning he would revert back to strictly an assisting scorers for the Thunder and releasing some of those ball handling responsibilities to Durant. As the playoffs approach this might not be something they want this close to the post season.

The difference in this situation verses the situation in Indiana is the Pacers as a cohesive unit have stepped up their game to make up for the lost of George; while the Thunder have placed the responsibilities onto Russell Westbrook. The problem with what happened in Oklahoma City is Russell Westbrook over this time has exploded and adjusted his game to make up for the lost of Durant. Minor changes to your game by a few players to make up the absence of a player is far easier to address then telling a superstar player some of his star power is going to have to be reeled in.

Are the Finals relevant, NOW?

The injury Bug has hit the Cavaliers and the Bulls. What does this mean for the Eastern Conference or the entire league? These teams were predicted to be the two teams in the Eastern Conference this season.  Story to follow ....
